Beyond Boston: Mohegan Sun Casino

While Boston’s own dreams of a casino remain in limbo, one of the biggest casinos in the country is just a short jaunt away. Located in Uncasville, Connecticut, Mohegan Sun offers gambling, entertainment, shopping and dining, making it a quick and easy Vegas-style getaway.

The casino’s massive 1,200-room hotel, all angles and shining glass walls, announces your arrival, rising from the rural landscape like a futuristic beacon. Most of the attractions are spread out around and beneath the main building. With everything indoors, you could easily avoid the outside world for days on end—which isn’t such a bad idea in the winter.

The main draw, of course, is the gambling, and Mohegan Sun has three casinos called Earth, Sky and Wind. Players choose from thousands of slot machines, poker tables and classic games, from Blackjack to Baccarat. Smoking is allowed in the casinos—a bit of a shock to our lily-white lungs—but there are non-smoking sections peppered throughout the complex.

Dozens of dining options range from quick and cheap to high-end, with everything from Krispy Kreme to Todd English's Tuscany (pictured below) to choose from. After dinner, pubs and clubs invite drinking and dancing. The recently revamped Avalon—a centerpiece of Lansdowne Street in Boston for years—is one of the casino’s star attractions. At 10,000-square-feet, the nightclub boasts hip DJs backed by a powerful sound system playing to a bustling dance floor. A handful of other nightspots offer different experiences depending on your mood, like Bow & Arrow Sports Bar, The Lansdowne Pub, and a laid-back pool bar.

When the chips run out, Mohegan Sun’s 10,000-seat arena draws big names like Jay Z, Prince, Kings of Leon, and—just announced—Bruce Springsteen. The WNBA team the Connecticut Suns also plays there, and the Harlem Globetrotters have a show coming up. The Cabaret Theatre and Wolf Den offer a more intimate entertainment experience.
