Sandro Botticelli and workshop, Venus (detail), about 1484–1490

When it comes to one-name Renaissance masters, Botticelli is near the top of the heap. And while there’s no lack of Italian masterpieces in Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts gives art lovers a unique opportunity to gaze upon the singular beauty of some of the Florence native’s most stunning art, including a version of Venus that mirrors the central figure of his most famous painting, the Birth of Venus. Botticelli and the Search for the Divine—a display of 24 images depicting both his early secular paintings as well as religious subjects that reflect the influence of the more strict version of Christianity touted by Florentine theocrat Girolamo Savonarola on Botticelli’s later career—debuted this past spring, yet won’t be around much longer. Hurry to the MFA now to see these timeless works, some of which have never before set foot in this country.
