Sea More Boston

From the Freedom Trail to the Black Heritage Trail to the Boston Harborwalk, the Hub has no lack of walkable territory to explore. One largely unheralded trail, however, offers a not-to-be-missed perspective on the city’s extensive maritime history that should be a hit with any fan of the country’s seagoing past. The self-guided Norman B. Leventhal Walk to the Sea tour strings together eight sites—starting on Beacon Hill in front of the State House and continuing downtown through Government Center and the Financial District before concluding at the end of Long Wharf (pictured)—with 10 panels touting the vast changes each locale has experienced. Based on maps from the extensive historical collection at the Boston Public Library, the signs are both informative and visually arresting reminders of the Hub’s continuous evolution over the centuries.
