Clinton Kelley
by Josh B. Wardrop
Style expert Clinton Kelly is best known to fashion-forward types as co-host of the popular TLC show “What Not to Wear.” On June 5 at 6 p.m., Kelly appears at Macy’s in nearby Chestnut Hill (55 Boylston St., Newton, 617-243-4600) for a special “Finding Your Fit” style seminar. The Boston College alumnus talked to Panorama about fashion trends both good and bad.
Q: What will you be talking about at the Macy’s fashion event?
A: We’ll be looking at wardrobe essentials—helping people figure
out how to get the most for their money and pick out pieces that work for day, evening,
work and the weekend. I’ll also answer any and all questions people have for
me—it’s pretty rare anyone stumps or surprises me anymore, but I encourage
trying! (laughs)
Q: What are some key fashion trends you’re seeing for summer?
A: There are a ton right now—too many to follow, really. But bright
citrus colors—lime green, yellow, orange—are in this season. Bold prints
and florals are big right now, as are tribal looks like batik prints and gladiator
sandals.
Q: What’s the worst fashion trend at the moment?
A: Well, I think Crocs are just ridiculous, unless you’re a child
or you’re working in the garden. And I’ve seen more leggings than I’d
care to lately.
Q: Do the subjects on “What Not to Wear” ever curse you and co-host Stacy
London out for trashing their wardrobes?
A: Who knows? After we trash the clothes we get the heck out of there! (laughs)
Most people get that we’re trying to help them, so it doesn’t generally
get ugly.
Q: You’re a BC grad—planning to hit any old haunts during your visit?
A: Well, I still love to walk down Newbury Street—it’s so beautiful,
and the shopping’s amazing. Boston was a great place to go to school—when
you turn 21, there’s plenty of places to celebrate and people to celebrate
with!
