Art Remixed

Pierre Leguillon, La grande évasion (The Great Escape), 2012

While appropriation in art is not a new concept, today’s artists have continued to find new and interesting ways to incorporate the works of other artists into their own work to create new and sometimes unexpected narratives. Such is the idea behind the new exhibit The Artist’s Museum, which begins November 16 at The Institute of Contemporary Art. Installations, photographs, films and videos by an international roster of some of the art world’s most creative thinkers—including the Swiss-born, New York-based Carol Bove; Berlin-based Italian native Rosa Barba; France’s Pierre Leguillon; Boston-trained Swiss-American Christian Marclay; and acclaimed American artists such as Xaviera Simmons, Rachel Harrison and Sara VanDerBeek—immerse viewers in new worlds inspired by past artists ranging from painter René Magritte and photographer Berenice Abbott to the experimental art collective Fluxus.
