Revolutions Per Minute Film Festival (pictured): The cutting-edge and experimental are the focus of this area-wide, artist-run collection that is held September 28–October 3. Most screenings—which largely consist of short films from all over the world—are ticketed, yet reservations can be made for free viewings at Boston City Hall and Harvard University.

Boston Asian American Film Festival: ArtsEmerson's Emerson Paramount Theatre hosts the 16th iteration of New England's largest film fest dedicated to the Asian American experience. In-person screenings take place October 18–20 and include features, documentaries and programs of short films, while virtual viewing of the six shorts presentations continues through October 27.

Boston Palestine Film Festival: Running October 18–27 at Boston area venues that include the Museum of Fine Arts, the Coolidge Corner Theatre and the Brattle Theatre, this 18-year-old tradition reveals an independent view of the Palestinian experience through documentaries, short films and features.

GlobeDocs Film Festival: Presented by The Boston Globe October 22–27, this champion of engaging and relevant true-life stories offers a lineup of features and shorts accompanied by post-film talks with filmmakers and the venerable newspaper’s award-winning journalists.

Boston Jewish Film Festival: The 36th annual tradition, a longtime platform for Jewish-themed cinema that is held at several venues in and around Boston, returns November 6–20, with both in-person (November 6–17) and virtual (November 18–20) iterations.
