High 5: Celebrating Chinese New Year

Experience Asian culture at these gatherings marking the Year of the Snake

Chinese New Year Market: This pop-up market at the China Trade Center takes place from January 24–28, offering flowers, gifts, decorations, candy, plants and more to help visitors spice up their revels for New Year’s Day on January 29.

Wusong Road Chinese New Year Celebrations: This two-story bar and eatery tucked away in a historic building on the outskirts of Harvard Square hosts lion dances almost every night from January 27–February 1 at 7 p.m., with the exception of New Year’s Day, January 29, which presents the same spectacle from 6–8 p.m. Also enjoy a Year of the Snake cocktail along with special dishes the entire week.

Museum of Fine Arts Lunar New Year Celebration (pictured): January 30 at 5 p.m. is the starting point for the Fenway institution’s annual shindig, which boasts a traditional lion dance, art-making activities, tours and talks exploring the museum’s exceptional collection of Asian art, a tea-brewing demonstration, music and dance performances, and more.

Zishi Liu 2025 Chinese New Year Concert: On February 1 at 7:30 p.m., jazz club Regattabar at The Charles Hotel in Harvard Square welcomes the bandleader and saxophonist, who expresses the spirit of the Lunar New Year along with an ensemble of Asian musicians that mix tradition with innovation.

Chinese New Year Cultural Village: The China Trade Center is also home to a gathering on February 9 from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. that features Chinese calligraphy demonstrations, kid-centered arts and crafts, a lion dance and other performances. From there, it’s a short jaunt to the annual Chinatown Lion Dance Parade, which starts at 11 a.m. from the Phillips Square stage located at the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Beach Street, which has its own festivities until 3 p.m. as well.
