Dealing with themes of myth and reality in depictions of the southern United States, the new exhibit When the Stars Begin to Fall: Imagination and the American South opens February 4 at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Organized by The Studio Museum in Harlem, the show features work by 35 artists in mediums ranging from drawing and painting to video and sculpture. Both established artists—including familiar names in contemporary art like Kara Walker and Carrie Mae Weems—and those considered “outsiders” by the establishment who have received no formal training are represented. With work from multiple generations of folk and professional artists, this thought-provoking exhibition explores the African American experience as it relates to life south of the Mason-Dixon line.
