Boston Harbor Islands (pictured): All sorts of outdoor activities, from beachcombing and hiking to kayaking and camping, can be enjoyed just a short ferry ride from downtown Boston.

New England Aquarium: This longtime favorite showcases a vibrant underwater world along with seals, sea lions, a shark and ray touch tank, and its ever-popular penguin display.

Boston Children’s Museum: Learning and playing are one and the same at this excitement-filled institution along the Fort Point Channel.

Museum of Science: Kids and parents can’t get enough of the enlightening exhibits, butterfly garden, planetarium shows, live animal demonstrations and IMAX and 4-D films at this edifice on the Charles River Dam.

Boston by Foot: This non-profit tour operator offers the Boston By Little Feet excursion, a one-hour jaunt down the Freedom Trail on Saturdays and Sundays at 10 a.m. designed specifically with children from 6–12 years old in mind.
