Great gratis entertainment abounds in the Boston area this summer

Cymbeline: The Bard’s tale set in ancient Britain takes center stage as Commonwealth Shakespeare Company rolls out its annual, free Shakespeare on the Common production (pictured) from July 17–August 4.


Concerts in the Courtyard: The Boston Public Library hosts free live music—from roots to pop and classical to Venezuelan folk—in its gorgeous, historic atrium in Copley Square every Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Friday at 12:30 p.m.


Boston Landmarks Orchestra: Beginning July 17, brighten up your Wednesday evenings by taking in the new season of this classical ensemble, which stages no-cost concerts at the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell along the Charles River Esplanade at 7 p.m.


Summer in the City: The 21st annual series at Rowes Wharf showcases live music Tuesday through Thursday nights on a floating stage overlooking Boston Harbor as well as free classic and contemporary films on Friday evenings, including Jurassic Park (July 19) and Sleepless in Seattle (July 26).


Free Friday Flicks: Now in its 34th year, sunset screenings of recent, family-friendly hits take place end-of-week at the Hatch Shell along the Charles River. Upcoming films include the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse on July 19 and The Transformers spin-off Bumblebee on July 26, with free fun and games beginning at 6 p.m.
