One of the biggest, brightest and most culturally diverse celebrations in the Boston area returns September 11 when the Cambridge Carnival International takes up residence at University Park Commons and Sidney Street near Central Square from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. The spectacle highlighting the cultures of the African diaspora kicks into high gear around 12:30 p.m. with the annual Caribbean-style parade—complete with plenty of bedazzled, feathered dancers—beginning from River and Blackstone streets near the Charles River and continuing up River Street to Massachusetts Avenue before ending on Sydney Street. There, expect a multitude of food vendors, music performances, arts and crafts vendors, and fun for the kids for the rest of what is sure to be a vibrant and joyous afternoon. For an early taste of what’s in store, take in the Cambridge Carnival Jamboree on September 7 from 5–9 p.m. at Central Square’s Lafayette Square.
