Indulge in fun both fearful and non-frightful in Boston this spooky season

 

Freedom Trail Lantern Tour: Through October 29 on select Thursdays–Saturdays at 6 p.m., visitors (12 years of age and up is recommended) can explore the Freedom Trail’s darker side with this macabre excursion that illuminates factual, historic accounts of fatal duels, cutthroat pirates, hangings of convicted witches and murders most foul in and around the city’s centuries-old landmarks.

 

Tales from the Crypt Halloween Tours: On Fridays and Saturdays from October 14–29 at 5:30 and 7 p.m., the venerable King’s Chapel in Downtown Boston hosts candlelit tours of is lower reaches, where visitors can walk among 21 tombs while learning about 18th century burial customs and the distinguished dead contained within its walls.

 

Fall-o-ween Children’s Festival: A free annual spook-tacular at Boston Common’s beloved Frog Pond held on October 21 from 5–8 p.m., this grand display of lit, floating jack o’ lanterns is a delight for all ages. Activities for the kids can also be enjoyed, and the wearing of costumes is encouraged.

 

Boo at the Zoo/Zoo Howl (pictured): Non-profit Zoo New England stages a pair of fun, family-friendly events at both of its facilities this October. On October 22 & 23, enjoy Stone Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo in Stoneham, while the Hub’s Franklin Park Zoo hosts the Zoo Howl October 29 & 30. Both events take place from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. and boast costume contests, mystery animal encounters and educational experiences to inspire your future zoologist.

 

Doggone Halloween Parade: Head to Downtown Boston for this free costume contest/pet parade for the canine set and their owners on October 29 from noon–2:30 p.m. The best-dressed can earn prizes in a variety of categories, yet it’s the spectators who get to witness these adorable pooches who are the real winners.
