Boston’s Theatre District is abuzz this yuletide season with these heart-warming extravaganzas
Boston Ballet’s The Nutcracker (pictured): Company artistic director Mikko Nissinen brings his vision of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s timeless tale to the Citizens Opera House once again from November 29–December 29. Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score punctuates world-class dancing, sets and costumes that bring this family-friendly experience to life.
Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity: This decades-long tradition brought annually to audiences by the National Center of Afro-American Artists continues at the Emerson Paramount Center December 6–22. A gospel-infused song-play about the birth of Christ, Black Nativity also features energetic dance, propulsive African drums and a talented cast of both children and adults.
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol: The venerable Commonwealth Shakespeare Company debuts its inaugural holiday show at the Emerson Cutler Majestic Theatre December 8–22. The classic story of redemption is highlighted by new arrangements of Victorian-era carols that help narrate Ebenezer Scrooge’s transformation from bah-humbuggery to Christmas enthusiast.
Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical: The Boch Center’s Wang Theatre hosts this tuneful version of the seasonal favorite December 10–23. Inspired by the children’s book and famed television special, this long-running musical features the familiar “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” as well as newer works written just for the show.
Anthony Williams’ Urban Nutcracker: From December 14–22, the Boch Center’s other venue, the Shubert Theatre, welcomes this unique, Boston-set take on the familiar fantasia that is joyously intertwined with threads of Tchaikovsky, Duke Ellington, hip-hop, tap, ballet, flamenco and a melting pot of other music and dance styles from all over the world.
