
Cost-free entertainment continues to heat up the season in the Hub
Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular: Celebrate Independence Day with the beloved orchestra’s annual showcase at the Hatch Memorial Shell on the picturesque Charles River Esplanade. In addition to playing the usual patriotic standards, the Pops welcomes special guests LeAnn Rimes, Leslie Odom Jr. and Boston’s own Bell Biv DeVoe. The show starts at 7 p.m., ending with a glorious pyrotechnic display that begins around 9:40 p.m.
Wicked Good Playdates: Local parent resource Boston Moms brings its series of fun get-togethers for mothers and their young ones to the Seaport on July 12 and High Street Place on August 9. Swag bags are available for the first 50 attendees as well as Spanish music and movement at the Seaport event, while the High Street Place shindig has gift bags for the first 25 folks along with family entertainment from 10:30–11:30 a.m. courtesy of Little Groove Music.
Boston Landmarks Orchestra: On Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. beginning on July 16, this summer symphony presents free shows at the Hatch Memorial Shell along the Charles River. The first concert hosts the Longwood Symphony Orchestra, while future dates showcase Prokofiev’s family classic Peter and the Wolf (July 30), Beethoven’s Eroica symphony (August 20) and more. There’s even a kick-off shindig on July 13 from 2–4 p.m.
Watershed Block Party and Harborwalk Sounds: The Institute of Contemporary Art once again hosts community gatherings (pictured) at its East Boston facility on July 19 and August 16 from noon–4 p.m. that feature music, art, games and more. Meanwhile, the main Seaport locale across Boston Harbor hosts free outdoor concerts along the water on Thursday nights at 6 p.m. beginning on July 16.
Free Shakespeare on the Common: From July 23–August 10, enjoy the Bard’s timeless comedy As You Like It courtesy of the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company. This annual production near the Parkman Bandstand at America’s oldest public park takes place Tuesday through Sunday nights at 8 p.m., with Saturday matinees at 1 p.m. on August 2 & 9.
