Another sure sign of fall is just around the corner as the beloved Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) gets ready for its 2023–2024 season debut at Symphony Hall. A special treat is in store this time around, however, as sister organization—the no-less-lauded Boston Pops—takes the stage for several performances as a precursor to the official BSO opener. The Keith Lockhart-led orchestra pays tribute to the work of famed film composer and former Pops conductor John Williams September 22 & 23, with additional shows featuring the music of Star Wars on September 21, 23 & 24. On October 5 & 6, BSO conductor Andris Nelsons (pictured) then leads his musicians in a program featuring Beethoven, Mozart and more, while the night of October 7 sees the return of the Opening Night at Symphony Gala at 6 p.m., which adds some Duke Ellington into the mix. Other autumn highlights include appearances by acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma (October 12–15) and a slew of guest conductors before Nelsons makes his winter return with concerts highlighted by León, Ravel and Stravinsky (January 11–13) and the music from Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (January 23, 25 & 27).
