High 5: MLK Day Events

Celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on and around January 15 all over the city

Hear Her Sing for Freedom: The encore performances of this show about Coretta Scott King that debuted last year take place January 11–14 at the Multicultural Arts Center in East Cambridge. Experience what it might have been like to witness King, a former student at the New England Conservatory, perform at one of the many Freedom Concerts she organized to raise money for the fight for Civil Rights.

MLK Embrace Honors: Friends & Family Sneaker Affair: The group behind the new MLK and Coretta Scott King memorial on Boston Common brings this celebration of local civic, business and community leaders to the Big Night Live venue at TD Garden on January 14 from 6:30 p.m.–midnight. Highlights include an honors ceremony followed by two hours of live music performances.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast: The 54th annual edition of this much-anticipated gathering begins at 9 a.m. at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center and follows the theme of “Keeping the Promise of Democracy.” Keynote speaker Professor Khalil Gibran Muhammad, Ph.D., of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government is joined by local community leaders, who discuss the continuing importance of King’s message.

Museum of Fine Arts Open House (pictured): The encyclopedic Fenway institution continues its annual tradition of opening its doors for free to Massachusetts residents on MLK Day. Enjoy countless masterworks—including the soon-departing Fashioned by Sargent show—as well as art-making activities, music performances and Spotlight Talks from 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

In the Name of Love: 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Concert: Take in the Boston Children’s Chorus’ MLK Day concert, which takes place at Symphony Hall at 4 p.m. The show aims to give voice to MLK and fellow Civil Rights activists, including his wife Coretta and Bayard Rustin.
