High 5: Free Summer Events (Part 2)

Enjoy no-fee fun at these premium warm-weather happenings

Watershed Block Party: The Institute of Contemporary Art’s East Boston facility—which hosts the summer exhibit Hew Locke: The Procession—welcomes revelers to a shindig July 13 from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. that boasts art activities, live music and other performances. Meanwhile, the ICA’s home across Boston Harbor showcases Harborwalk Sounds, a series of free shows on its deck overlooking Boston Harbor on Thursday nights from July 11–August 29 from 6–8:30 p.m. courtesy of musicians from Berklee College of Music.

Shakespeare on the Common: Commonwealth Shakespeare Company returns to America’s oldest public park with the Bard’s The Winter’s Tale July 16–August 4. The 28th annual production is a tale of jealousy, betrayal, hope and the healing power of time—and did we mention death by bear?

Boston Landmarks Orchestra: The ensemble takes ups its regular summer residency at the Hatch Memorial Shell beginning July 17 at 5:30 p.m. with a Community Block Party. From there, the group performs every Wednesday at 7 p.m. through August 21 along the banks of the Charles River.

Boston Race Amity Arts and Music Festival (pictured): Faneuil Hall Marketplace hosts this annual celebration of togetherness on July 27 from noon–6 p.m. Experience live music and dance from a diverse array of acts, participate in a community art project, and browse locally made arts and crafts while enjoying free scoops from Ben & Jerry’s along with all-around good vibes.

Apollinaire in the Park: Taking place outdoors in Chelsea just to the north of Boston on Friday and Saturday nights from August 2–17, this bi-lingual collaboration between Apollinaire Theatre Company and Teatro Chelsea presents Aeschylus’ The Suppliant Women, an ancient yet still relevant tale of refugees fleeing their homeland for the chance to experience freedom.
