Strap on the blades and enjoy the fresh, brisk air at these prime recreation destinations
The Boston Common Frog Pond Outdoor Rink: This classic locale has been drawing skating enthusiasts for decades. The historic setting and large surface combine with a welcoming snack bar, skate rentals and lessons to make this a must-do for your winter bucket list.
Jack Kirrane Ice Skating Rink (pictured): Bucolic Larz Anderson Park in Boston-adjacent Brookline is the site of this wintry destination, which offers skate rentals and blade sharpening along with drop-in hockey for adults on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday mornings.
Kelly Rink: Boston’s hip Jamaica Plain neighborhood hosts this slick surface just a short jaunt from the MBTA Orange Line’s Stony Brook stop. After working up a thirst—for free, we might add, with just a $5 fee for skate rentals—it’s just another brief amble to the original Samuel Adams Boston Brewery, which offers exclusive pours of limited-edition brews, music bingo on Tuesday nights, trivia on Thursday nights and live music on Sunday afternoons along with unique special events all winter long.
Skate @ Canal District Kendall: Cambridge’s high-tech headquarters is home to this rink that stays frosty seven days a week through mid-March, weather permitting. Rentals skates and lessons are available. A bit farther afield, a sister facility, the Weston Ski Track, has more snowy frivolity on tap with opportunities for both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
The Rink at MarketStreet: Head to the Hub’s northern suburbs through February 23 for this open-air shopping area’s ice sheet, which abuts world-class shopping and dining options, including outposts of Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, Otto Pizza and Legal C Bar.
