Celebrate the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at these marquee happenings on and around January 20
Hear Her Sing for Freedom: From January 17–19, Cambridge’s Multicultural Arts Center once again presents this re-creation of one of the many fundraising concerts orchestrated by MLK’s wife, Coretta Scott King, who was instrumental in securing the resources necessary to keep the Civil Rights Movement going.
Embrace Honors MLK: Embrace Boston, an organization inspired by King, hosts this celebration January 19 from 6:30 p.m.–midnight at Big Night Live that honors local civic, business and community leaders and features a headlining performance from 10 p.m.–midnight.
Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast: This 55th annual gathering, organized around the theme “Freedom Isn’t Free,” takes place at the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport’s Ensemble Ballroom on January 20 from 9–11 a.m., and features professor, activist and icon Angela Davis as its keynote speaker.
Museum of Fine Arts Open House (pictured): The Fenway’s encyclopedic art institution offer free admission to Massachusetts residents on January 20 from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. as part of its annual recognition of MLK Day. In addition to blockbuster exhibits like Georgia O’Keeffe and Henry Moore, visitors can enjoy an art-making station, guided tours, a job fair, dance and music performances, special talks throughout the galleries and more.
Road to Freedom: The 22nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Concert: Boston Children’s Chorus (BCC) presents its yearly show at Symphony Hall on January 20 at 4 p.m. BCC tips its collective hat to both MLK and Malcolm X, highlighting the intersection of their struggles for freedom and equality.
