A New Look at Nubia
Pendant with ram-headed sphinx (detail), 743–712 B.C.E.

A fresh look at an often-overlooked civilization unfolds on October 13 at the Museum of Fine Arts in the new exhibit Ancient Nubia Now, which explores the fascinating kingdom that flourished in the land south of ancient Egypt through the display of more than 400 objects spanning Nubia’s millennia-long existence. Many artifacts in the show were unearthed in the early 20th century by a joint expedition by the Museum of Fine Arts and Harvard University, yet due to the richness and breadth of this world-class collection, some treasures are just now making their public debuts. Marvel at dazzling jewelry, majestic statuary, a still-untranslated inscription and more while learning of Nubia’s glorious past and the reasons its legacy is not more widely celebrated.
