Hundreds of runners and thousands of spectators gather in the Hub once again for the 129th running of the Boston Marathon, which takes place on the 250th anniversary of Patriots’ Day on April 21. The world’s oldest annual marathon offers plenty of opportunities for fans to cheer on elite runners and amateurs alike along its 26.2-mile course from Hopkinton to Boston’s Copley Square, as well as a plethora of both official and unofficial special events throughout the weekend. One tradition that continues is the pre-race Boston Marathon Expo from April 18–20 at the Hynes Convention Center in the Back Bay, where runners can pick up their bibs and browse the latest running gear and marathon merch with friends and family. The Boston Marathon Fan Fest at City Hall Plaza also takes place April 18–20, boasting appearances by past champions, live music, fun activities and a race clinic. On race day, restaurants up and down Boylston Street—including finish line faves Abe & Louie’s and Atlantic Fish Co., which present ticketed pre-race and viewing parties both indoors and outdoors on their respective patios—offer great vantages and rollicking good times along the home stretch. There’s even an official Mile 27 Post-Race Party hosted by Samuel Adams back at City Hall Plaza from noon–8 p.m. that offers food, beer, live bands and lots of fun for both runners and running aficionados.
