Blades of Glory

For the first time ever, Boston plays host to one of the biggest figure skating competitions outside of the Olympics—the World Figure Skating Championships (refer to listing, page 18). Taking place at the TD Garden from May 28–April 3, this eagerly anticipated event features 200 of the world’s best skaters, who all compete in their respective categories—men, ladies, pairs and ice dancing—to be crowned world champion. Likely crowd favorites include current U.S. ice dance champions Maia and Alex Shibutani (pictured). Although currently residing in Michigan, Alex was born in Boston, while both siblings were raised in Connecticut. Another skater with local connections competing for the red, white and blue is the 2016 national ladies champ, Newton, Mass.-born Gracie Gold. After all the judging has concluded, an encore takes place April 3 from 2–4:15 p.m. in the form of the Exhibition of Champions, where all medalists showcase their skills, all in the spirit of fun.
