Island Getaway

As the summer season draws to a close, there’s no better time to visit the Boston Harbor Islands, a state and national park made up of 34 islands and peninsulas on and off the coast of the Hub. In fact, a year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the state park and 25th year of the national park started in 2021 and continues into 2022, inspiring plenty of special events of which visitors can still take advantage. Beyond the usual beaches, hiking trails, scenic vistas and historic sites that are available throughout the warmer months, cruises to view the area’s historic lighthouses are up and running every Friday and Saturday. Looking for dining with a view? Check out the soirees hosted by Brato Brewhouse Kitchen and Night Shift Brewing on August 13 & 27 from 4:30–8:30 p.m. Held on Spectacle Island, these popular shindigs feature live music, food, outstanding craft brews, and plenty of fun and games. Brato also does a more food-centric solo turn on Spectacle every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon–4:30 p.m. through September 4. Are sunsets your jam? Then Brato’s Sunset Lobster Clam Bakes at Spectacle Island on August 18 & 25 and September 1 are worth the ferry ride. Other happenings include the free Sounds of Fort Warren fife and drum concert on August 6, Berklee College of Music’s Jazz on the Porch series on Sunday afternoons in August at Spectacle Island, and vintage baseball games in which teams don period-appropriate uniforms and play according to the game’s 19th century rules. These contests are held at Fort Warren on Georges Island, with the last one of the season taking place August 28. The first 150 guests even receive an anniversary edition Fort Warren pennant. All of this and much more can be found on the Harbor Island’s online calendar, so check the ferry schedule and plan your own getaway before summer is nothing but a memory.
