Baking for Good

Part of a growing fundraising movement dedicated to fighting cancer in women, the local edition of the Boston-based Bakes for Breast Cancer returns to its home region May 10–16, boasting participation by some of the city’s most talented creators of sweet treats. After getting its start 25 years ago, the charity has spread this year to new locations, including Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., yet the mission remains the same—raise funds for breast cancer research by involving restaurants, bakeries, cafes and retails shops, who offer the proceeds from the sale of special desserts to contribute to the cause. In the Hub, the list of contributing luminaries is highlighted by such favored destinations as Aquitaine’s South End and Chestnut Hill outposts; Bistro du Midi, which serves crème brulée for the event; the Back Bay locale of Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, which offers up its creamy panna cotta with fresh berries; Joanne Chang’s lauded Flour Bakery + Café, which presents its raspberry swirl cheesecake at nine different locations; and the Boston Harbor Hotel’s Rowes Wharf Sea Grille, which tempts with the framboise and rose bombe with pistachio and bitter orange (pictured). No matter where you are in the area, there’s no reason to feel guilt by satisfying your sweet tooth by seeking out whatever sugary confection you crave—at least for one week in May.
