A.R.T. Tops BroadwayWorld.com Awards

BroadwayWorld Boston recently announced the winners of its 2013 Theater Awards, as voted by the public. The American Repertory Theater dominated the competition with awards for Pippin (Best Actress in a Musical Rachel Bay Jones, Best Costume Design, Best Musical, and more), All the Way (Best Actor Bryan Cranston, Best New Play, pictured) and The Glass Menagerie (Best Actress in a Play Celia Keenan-Bolger, Best Director John Tiffany, Best Sound Design). Among the other winners: Stoneham Theatre (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Best Actor in a Musical Andrew Giordano), Huntington Theatre Company (Our Town, Best Ensemble) and War Horse (Best Touring Production). New Rep Turns 30
Watertown-based New Repertory Theatre celebrates its 30th anniversary this year with a season they’re calling “Paradox: Heroes & Antiheroes, Virtues & Vices.” Kicking off in September, the 2014–2015 season includes Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins, Tennessee Williams’ The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore and Leigh Barrett’s Closer Than Ever. The company will also present an encore of Imagining Madoff, which recently wrapped up its initial run at the Arsenal Center for the Arts; it will return May 28-June 1. In a recent release, Artistic Director Jim Petosa explains, “Our new season’s plays feature paradoxical characters that are both heroic and antiheroic. They possess certain virtues and as well as vices. Our perception of them changes as they live through the stories they play out, in comedy, drama and musical form.” Read more at newrep.org.

Hasty Pudding Names Its Man and Woman of the Year
The Hasty Pudding Theatricals have selected their 2014 Man and Woman of the Year: Neil Patrick Harris and Dame Helen Mirren. The historic Harvard University group, the oldest theatrical organization in the U.S., recognizes performers who have made significant contributions to the world of entertainment. Academy Award-winner Mirren joins the ranks of past winners Meryl Streep, Elizabeth Taylor and Anne Hathaway. Emmy Award-winning actor Harris, know for his work on the television series “How I Met Your Mother” and “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” is preceded by the likes of Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford and Justin Timberlake. Both actors were given a celebratory roast before being presented with the Pudding Pot at Farkas Hall, the group’s home in the heart of Harvard Square since 1888. They also received a tour of the new Hasty Pudding Clubhouse in the Hyde Taylor House. In other news, Hasty Pudding Theatricals’ 166th production plays February 7 through March 9 at Farkas Hall (12 Holyoke St., Cambridge). “Slum’s the word” in the student-produced show, called Victorian Secrets.
