High Five: Tasty Tapas

With their small portions and high prices, Spanish-style tapas could have been a fleeting trend in the culinary world — but they appear to be here to stay. The plates may be petite, but they're big on flavor, winning over hungry diners one bite at a time.

Toro. This South End hotspot (pictured) is worth the wait you'll likely encounter at all hours of the day. Chef Jamie Bissonnette serves up modern and traditional Barcelona-style dishes ranging from Suquet de Maliscos (seafood stew) to Corazon (smoked beef heart) to Pan con Tomate (garlicky tomato toast). Wash it all down with a calimocho, an addictive blend of red wine and Coca Cola. 1704 Washington St., 617-536-4300.

Dali Restaurant & Tapas Bar. It may be off the beaten path, but Dali is one of the area’s most popular tapas spot. Fans show up in droves to dine on tasty Spanish-style dishes and killer sangria in a festive and romantic setting. 415 Washington St., Somerville, 617-661-3254.

Tapeo Restaurant & Tapas Bar. This sister to Dali may not share its eclectic ambiance, but its location, outdoor seating options and similar menu make it a top choice for diners. 266 Newbury St., 617-267-4799.

Taberna de Haro. Taberna is small but packs a punch of Spanish authenticity into its menu and wine list thanks to its owners—native Spaniard Julio de Haro and his wife, chef Deborah Hansen de Haro, who first test-drove her skills in Spain. 999 Beacon St., Brookline, 617-277-8272.

Cuchi Cuchi. Bring your best Charo impersonation in for a combination of freshly made cocktails (we’re talking whole chunks of fruit muddled right in your glass) and a truly international array of tastes served up tapas-style. 795 Main St., Cambridge, 617-864-2929.
