Open Season

As we all know, the (ahem) interruptions of the last year-plus caused many regular happenings from, well, happening, so there’s little surprise over the eager anticipation folks are feeling about having any excuse to get out and about. A prime example of this is the return of Open Newbury Street, an endeavor by the City of Boston to promote a more relaxed, leisurely and—perhaps most importantly—car-free experience on Boston’s hippest shopping boulevard. Held on several Sundays this August (August 15, 22 and 29, to be precise) from 10 a.m.–8 p.m., the event involves the banning of cars from Berkeley Street to Massachusetts Avenue, creating a pedestrian-friendly shoppers’ paradise in the heart of this prime piece of Back Bay real estate. Visitors are encouraged to take public transportation to several of the nearby MBTA subway stations or the Back Bay commuter rail just a few blocks away. However you get there, bring your credit card and sense of fun, as many retailers set up outside to enhance the unique street party atmosphere that is sure to ensue.
